  • Special Instructions to Paramotor Pilots

    Introduction

Due to the volume of complaints received by Davidstow Airfield relating to paramotor flying activity, the following instructions are provided to mitigate noise nuisance and to prevent paramotors disturbing livestock in the surrounding area. Failure to fly in accordance with these instructions may lead to action being taken against individual pilots and could ultimately result in a ban from the use of DFC facilities.

    Insurance

    • You must be a current BHPA member CP or above with a PPG Rating.

    Take off & Landing Times

    • No take offs or landings before 08:00 Monday to Saturday

    • No take offs or landings before 10:00 Sundays and bank holidays

    • No take offs or landings after 21:00 on any day

    Altitude

Note: It is the responsibility of the pilot to be able to determine his/her altitude AGL at all times. Visual perception of height can vary greatly depending on weather conditions and as such the use of an altimeter or mobile app is strongly recommended.

    • After take-off, paramotors must climb to 1,200 ft AGL as quickly as possible before leaving the Paramotor climb-out area (see map).

    • Once at altitude, pilots must clear the immediate area as quickly as possible.

    • A minimum altitude of 1,200 ft AGL must be maintained at all times until 5 miles clear of the airfield. As an approximate guide this altitude must be maintained until reaching Delabole or Boscastle to the West/NW and the A30 to the South East, (see map). Beyond these boundaries, standard air law applies.

    • Paramotors are to respect the strict No-Fly-Zone to the North of the airfield as outlined in the DFC standing instructions, (see map).

    • Approaches to the airfield must be made at 1,200 ft AGL or above and then descend within the designated paramotor area, being mindful not to cross or interfere with the runways.

    • If cloud cover prevents an altitude of 1,200 ft AGL being obtained, then no paramotor may leave the paramotor designated area and as such, flying should be postponed until conditions permit.

    • Forced landing practice must not be undertaken within 5 miles of the airfield unless within the paramotor designated area.

    Group flying

    • If cross country flying in groups of more than 3, pilots should break down into pairs, take off and then quickly clear the area. This procedure will greatly reduce the time that airborne pilots circle the airfield whilst waiting for others to take-off, yet will maintain the safety of the buddy system.

    Flight Recording

    • In the event of a complaint, failure to be able to demonstrate your position and altitude at any given time may result in action being taken against you. Although not compulsory, it is strongly recommended that all pilots carry a flight recording system. This can be as simple as a mobile phone app such as “Gaggle” or similar. Ensure that you are familiar with the operation of your chosen system, that the system is fully charged before take-off and that the battery capacity will outlast the duration of the flight.
