  • Hello future PPG Pilot

Great to hear you have an interest in learning to Paramotor.

Below is an overview covering some of the basic’s questions, requirements and costs involved.

    The Aircraft?

Paramotoring is one of the simplest and cheapest forms of powered flight to date. The aircraft is piloted by being suspended under a special fabric wing in a similar configuration to a parachutist. Propulsion is provided by a lightweight engine and propeller which is worn on the pilots back like a rucksack, with a flight endurance of three hours plus and with speeds between 20-50+mph. The wing and motor will fit in the boot of most cars, which makes travelling to flying locations hassle-free, convenient and low cost compared to some other forms of aviation.

    The School?

Here at SouthWest Paramotors we are the only operational BHPA paramotor school in the southwest. We are also the only Parajet affilated school in the UK which allows us to work closley with them on new products and bring you the best equipment to learn to fly on!

This means our instructors have been through a rigorous training system (Club Pilot rating, Pilot rating, Club couch, Traninee instructor, Instructor, Senior instructor, Chief FIying Instructor) we aim to run 365 days a year weather dependent.

You will be trained to a BHPA CP Rating (British hang gliding and paragliding association Club Pilot) Level, which entitles you to the BHPA insurance which is commonly known as the most popular and reliable insurance available once training has been completed.

Training will be completed out of Davidstow airfield part of Davidstow flying club. The great thing about RAF Davidstow is as you transition from student to pilot you always have other pilots including Paramotor, Flex wing and Ultralight pilots to soak up as much information as possible and to plan many adventures in the future.

    Fitness?

Although predominantly a foot-launched aircraft, no running is involved when correct techniques are applied as you are pushed into the air with managed footwork. You do need normal mobility and stamina to carry out training tasks. Any medical conditions to be disclosed and discussed before training can commence.

    Learning?

We use a day rate method of training, one fee for 10 Training sessions. Most complete the course between 8-10 days. However, if you bypass these days a day rate of £150 is required until the course is completed.

Time to learn varies from person to person. Usually, the first flight is achieved around day five and fully signed off around day ten, although, in reality, this could be plus or minus a few days depending on ability and learning style.

    What’s the costs?
From complete beginner to solo pilot costs £2000 + £170 BHPA yearly membership What does this include?

    • BHPA Club Pilot Rating

    • Covers all use of school equipment during the course (Helmets, Coms, Radios, Ground handling wings, Ground handling harnesses, Flying wings, Paramotor, Fuel)

    • Access the Southwest PPG group chat with 40+ ex students PPG pilots perfect for planning XC’s in the future

    Equipment

After the first flight you would greatly benefit from being on your own equipment rather than relying on school equipment, allowing for faster development, greater familiarity while in the safety and control of the school environment.

Regardless if you finish the training course on our or your own equipment, for guidance, wing and paramotor new start in the region of £3500 and £6000 respectively.

if you want to go down the second hand route do not expect to be able to get into this sport on a budget of less than £7000 minimum due to the quality of cheap second-hand kit not being airworthy.

    What next?

I hope the above helps, however, if you need further information or would like to know more on getting started, then please get in touch.
